Hyderabad, 7th July – IMT Hyderabad hosted the 1st episode of its leadership series for this year on 07th July 2023. The speaker for the event was Dr. Sanjay Chaturvedi, CEO of Aurobindo Pharma. The event began with a warm welcome note from Prof. Dr. Sarath Babu.
The speaker commenced the event by stating that it was okay to disagree with someone but not disagreeable. Talking about the root cause analysis of any matter in question, Dr. Sanjay noted the most accessible way was to ask why five times. The speaker also discussed the correspondence between the first battle of Panipat and the world's corporates and that the underdogs usually perform exceptionally. He stated that the bottleneck is always at the top of the bottle, and the underdogs have an advantage. Talking about the S&P 500 companies of the world, he stated that more than 52% of the companies had been kicked out of the club and that to be kicked out of the club, you first have to make it to the club. He also stated how a privilege that is a pain for others is not a privilege.
Talking about evaluating an organization's culture, Dr. Sanjay suggested the attendees check the company's worst behavior exhibited and tolerated and that it was the best way to assess its culture. Another way to evaluate an organization's culture is to ask employees whether they aspire to become like their managers. The litmus tests for culture include how you are treated at the reception, how the company's vendors are treated, and how the exit interviews are conducted. The speaker also stated the importance of learning, unlearning, and relearning. Speaking about the importance of data, he suggested the attendees challenge everyone using relevant data.
While suggesting to the attendees how to choose companies to work for, the speaker suggested asking the company why they are in the business they are in without considering money. In the example of Singapore and Cuba, he also talked about how different countries developed under different leaderships. He stated that countries that have seen enormous growth are the ones who are not afraid to take risks. He also talked about X+2 and X-2 rules companies should follow. The new candidate hired must be capable of handling two levels above the role hired for, and the hierarchy should always be followed.
Dr. Sanjay also talked about the importance of the people around him. He suggested always working with people who inspire and motivate you and that the only way to improve is to work with people who are better than you. He also gave an example of PayPal and that all 13 founding members went on to establish their own multi-million dollar companies. Finally, Dr. Sanjay also discussed the importance of work-life balance and that life should come first in this equation.
The event ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Dr. Sarath Babu.
