IMTH as a member of the ITU - UN agency

IMT Hyderabad, 15th July 2025: The Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Hyderabad has been approved by India’s Ministry of Communications to become an Academia Member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialized agency for information and communication technologies. This significant milestone strengthens IMT Hyderabad’s leadership in digital and telecom education, adding to its four-decade legacy in management excellence.

ITU, with 193 member states, plays a central role in shaping global ICT policy, innovation, and standardization. IMT Hyderabad’s inclusion aligns with its strategic vision and reinforces India’s standing in the global digital ecosystem. A premier B-school with robust industry linkages, IMT Hyderabad offers a specialized PGDM program in Information Technology, developed in partnership with HCL Technologies. Its Centre for Digital Transformation leads research in 5G, AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity – key areas aligned with both national priorities and ITU’s agenda.

The ITU membership gives IMT Hyderabad access to global telecom policy frameworks, databases, and research collaborations. The institute plans to contribute to ITU study groups and policy dialogues, particularly in digital inclusion and cybersecurity. Faculty will gain global exposure while contributing academic insights to international discussions.

In the long term, IMT Hyderabad envisions launching an ITU-affiliated innovation hub on campus, integrating ITU frameworks into its curriculum, and co-hosting events with ITU. These initiatives will offer students direct engagement with global telecom experts and real-world challenges.

Prof (Dr) Baharul Islam, Director of IMT Hyderabad, stated “this membership underscores our vision to bridge academia and industry in the digital economy. Through ITU, we will amplify our research impact, empower students with global perspectives, and support India’s leadership in telecom innovation.”

This achievement complements IMT Hyderabad’s memberships with global institutions like AACSB, EFMD Global Network, and UN-PRME. Importantly, the institute confirmed that all membership costs will be covered internally, with no financial burden on the government.

With this development, IMT Hyderabad reinforces its vision to bridge academia and industry in the digital domain, preparing future-ready professionals who can navigate and shape the evolving telecom landscape. The membership will not only elevate the institute's research output but also provide students with unparalleled exposure to global telecom trends and innovations, positioning them as leaders in India's digital transformation journey. As IMT Hyderabad embarks on this new chapter of global collaboration, it stands poised to make substantial contributions to both the ITU community and India's aspirations to become a global hub for telecom innovation and policy leadership.
